The JUNGFRAU: queen of the bernese alps Jun 16, 2012
Rising at 4,158 m (13,642 ft) and towering over the town of interlaken and the berner oberland, the massive jungfrau gleaming white is definitely a sight to behold.
the jungfrau in english could be translated as maiden but the apt word for it is "the virgin". legend has it that (copied from a website of the swiss mountains) "the mountain was named after The Jungfrau - maiden - probably refers to the nuns of Interlaken, whose convent, dedicated to the Virgin, owned large amounts of land in the area, including pasture near its foot. as in so many cases, the name of the pasture was later applied to the mountain itself. another version, however, claims that the shape of the snow covered peak, so near and yet so far, reminded people of nuns in their white robes."
although the jungfrau is only the 3rd highest mountain in the bernese alps after the finsteraarhorn and the aletschorn, it is the most dominating mountain of all because it forms the great lauterbrunnen wall of the bernese alps for which it is the highest peak of mountains over 3200 meters covering the 1st and 2nd highest mountains at the back and the wall of the jungfrau towers 3kms above the valley of lauterbrunnen. the jungfrau can be seen clearly as far as bern, the capital of switzerland more or less 60 kms away and wherever you are in interlaken and the surrounding region, the jungfrau will always be there dominating and looming above. if you are a lord of the rings fan - jrr tolkien made the silberhorn (the sub peak of the jungfrau) an inspiration to name it as the "celebdil" one of the three highest peaks in the misty mountains. where gandalf battled the balrog at the endless stairs of durin at the peak.
undoubtedly, the queen of the bernese alps.
the jungfrau is free to see of course, but getting there is quite expensive - you have to travel to interlaken to see it as near as possible and hike the mountains parallel to it to be able able to see how massive it is and how the north face just rises majestically 3kms from the valley floor.
the best view of the jungfrau (without having to hike) is to 1. take the cable car from wengen to männlichen, 2. schilthorn cable car 3. and to the jungfraujoch - the highest train station in europe 3400m - in high altitude to see up close the beautiful south face of the jungfrau and the eternal snow and glaciers - a stark contrast to the fairy meadows and forest in mürren (1300 meters). oh "that beauty" that surrounds it. its just isnt 5 stars - its more than that.
