Incline Madness Jul 26, 2017
This hike also known as the Manitou Incline, and very challenging to do. I have completed the incline many of times, and every time I wonder why do I like to do this hike? Obviously it is not a regular hike, since the it consist of roughly a mile. It is not one for those with medical conditions, or doubts of making the hike. I have seen people turn around (appearing to look fit) and at times it could be simply for not hydrating enough. Therefore, bring enough water to last 2-4 hours, but also light enough to carry. Camel-baks are always the best fit, and I also recommend some type of protein bars or gels to keep you going throughout the fun. Good pairs of boots, or good gripping sneakers work too. I have seen kids go up, but fit and conditioned enough to hike the 6000-8000 elevation territory it is in.

After getting over half way up there will be a point where it looks like it is over, but has 1/4 left to go. They call this point the false summit. I always trick myself when I see it,, and soon realize I have more steps to take before finishing.

Parking Is at the base of Manitou city, along the streets, and even in the parking lot for the incline. Some spots you will have to pay, and especially the parking lot. After the hike, you will be able to enjoy many restaurants in the surrounding area or local shopping in Manitou as well. Best of wishes to those that have never tried and especially from out of town!

Athletic challenge with a view Jul 12, 2011
The Incline is an unofficial trail that runs about 2 miles strait up the mountain next to the official Barr Trail. This tortuous little trail is what is left of an old rail car ride that shut down some years ago. Today people hike up the track ties that remain of the forgotten ride for exercise or just to say they did it. The hike will be as challenging as you like based on your pace but it will never be easy! The views are beautiful and the people are nice enough if they are not preoccupied with the challenge. Most people opt to come back down by Barr trail as the average exhausted set of legs will not be up to safely coming back down the steep angle and varied footing. I attached a picture but trust me it does it no justice. If your idea of a guilty pleasure is a somewhat masochistic physical challenge then I am sure you will enjoy the Incline. Have fun!
