The Igreja de Santa Maria church Obidos Reviews
Small, but cute Sep 09, 2010
The street Rua Direita leads to square Praça de Santa Maria where you can find this small church. It has a white bell tower and an unusual corridor in renaissance style.
When the Mores controlled the city of Óbidos there was an Islamic prayer house at this spot, but when Afonso Henriques conquered Óbidos in 1148, a church was built here. The present church dates from the 16th century and the inside walls are decorated with very nice 18th century tiles.
On the 15th of August 1441 crown prince Afonso (he later became king Afonso V of Portugal) married his cousin Isabel in this church. At that time he was ten years old and she was eight.
At the church square there is a stone pillory, decorated with a fishing net. With this, queen Leonor wanted to honour the fishermen who dragged her son Afonso (one of many Afonso’s) from a river after he had made a deadly fall from his horse and ended up in the water.
