Beautiful modern suites, fantastic rooftop pool/lounge with great brunch and gorgeous views. A little removed from the "action" but still close enough (5 min drive) which was perfect for getting in/out quickly.
Beautiful rooftop for morning brun…

A tale of two rooms.... Jun 23, 2011
For us, the Wilshire Hotel was a tale of two rooms. We checked in to the hotel for 7 nights after leaving the car with the compulsory valet service (one of my pet hates, especially when the garage is right there on the premises). We were given a room on the 7th floor with a view of Wilshire Boulevard and the room was ok. Average size, average condition and average cleanliness, no complaints. The problems began after dark when trying to get to sleep, the noise outside the window was terrible, a constant flow of traffic, horns blaring and general passers by making a din. I know we were in one of the biggest cities on earth and it was never going to be tranquil, but really, this was ridiculous.

The next morning after a sleepless night we asked if we could be moved to the rear of the hotel, and the receptionist duly obliged. What a difference, chalk and cheese! The room was much, much, quieter and we had a fabulous panoramic view over LA including sights such the Hollywood sign, the Griffith Observatory, the Capital Records Building, and the Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard. From then on our stay improved dramatically although we did question to ourselves why we hadn't been given a rear facing room in the first place given that we were there for 7 nights and most guests on the rear aspect seemed to stay just one or two.

The location of the hotel, in Koreatown, is also a little dubious, and on more than one occasion locals questioned why we had chosen that part of town as though there was a safety issue. To be fair we didn't feel threatened in any way and most of the time we travelled to the hotel by car so we didn't have to walk the neighbourhood. Without the car transport may have been more of an issue although the hotel is on a bus route and opposite the Normandie subway station.

Amenities at the hotel were good, with a Starbucks on site, a small general store, a decent pool and a small but adequate gym with that amazing view of LA to gaze at as you work out.

One thing of note is that there were always a friendly bunch of travellers at the bar each night. The friendliness seemed to radiate from the barmen who engaged in conversation and encouraged mingling of the clientèle. One particular night we sat into the wee small hours with a group that included Australians, Americans from all over the US, English, and Germans all enjoying each other's company.

This isn't a bad hotel but the one thing I would stress to anyone considering staying here is to demand a high floor, rear facing room, I promise it will make such a difference to your stay.
