The Hotel Donaldson Fargo Reviews

Rather hyped up Aug 29, 2017
The spiel to this hotel is that it's Fargo's premiere boutique hotel. They've picked local artists' paintings, a single room has paintings only by a single artist.

The pros:

- Great location. When they said "at the heart of Fargo", they meant the heart of Fargo.

- Rooms look very chic yet have all the amenities one needs: powerful wifi, ironing board, hair dryer, etc. Even the fridge and snack bar is well stocked.... and they sell condoms too (available inside a metallic box like the one they use for mints, called "the Pleasure kit")

- Good wifi

- Cable TV! Not just the usual channels but also HBO, etc. (great for a Game of Thrones fan such as me)

- Walet parking for an extra fee ($15 per night)

- Nice gym

- In-house restaurant and rooftop pub/bar (for those days you're too lazy to go out)

CONS:

- Lack of buffet breakfast - you can only order room service. A bread basket (1 muffin, scone and sourdough bread) is complimentary

- Lack of staff: as there's a general lack of staff in the Fargo service industry, I ran into several scenarios where the receptionist wasn't around because he was also doubling as the walet pulling someone else's car (which means I had to wait till he brings mine around), bathrooms weren't restocked with soap, etc.

- Sloppy room cleaning: I dropped a piece of pizza on my bedsheet. I come back the next day and notice the bedsheet was cunningly re-arranged such that the stain was now "hidden" under the pillow!

- Not ideal for group travel: whilst there are conference rooms you can book, your team can't just "gather around" a common area (like a breakfast buffet place) and plan for the day

- The restaurant and bar aren't exactly cheap! And no extra points for being house patrons

Overall, it's a "photogenic" hotel and makes for a great Facebook post ("hey friends, lucky me! I'm staying at a swish hotel downtown"). But it's perfectly fine if you stay at a common mainstream "chain" hotel, you're not missing much!
