Hogenakkal the mini Niagara of south India Dec 31, 2010
Hogenekkal is one of the most sought after tourist destinations for the locals and some foriegners also make a visit. It is about 350 kms from Chennai and is only 200 kms from Bangalore. It is very close to Dharmapuri town and is idlyicaly located uphill in the Melagiri hills. The falls is the entry point of the river Cauvery from Karnataka into Tamilnadu and is a miniature version similar to the Niagara. The river below the falls flows inbetween carbonite rock formations into lower ground where the sand is more like a beach. You can hire a country craft which is about 2 metres in diameter and made of hide and bamboo. No life jackets are provided and it is upto you to chose.A bath in one of the rivlets surely rejuvenates you.Ther are Hotels lodges and even house for rent but it is wise for foriegners to stick to the government hotels or to the expensive ones nearby.Don't expect the hotels or the place to be very clean, mod and upto international standards for you will be dissappointed. The tourism industry is yet to be organised in the proper perspective.

Summers are hot but boating bathing and wading in the streams are permited only then. Rainy seasons in Karnataka and in the ghats is when water related activities are prohibited. If you are interested in angling, early mornings in the river could well be worthy.A rustic place, but one which is interesting; is how I feel of this mini Niagara of south India.
