Good English Steak Dec 16, 2010
Being a long time lover of steak I jumped on the opportunity to try somewhere new and went for the Hawksmoor at Seven Dials (Covent Garden). The occasion was a Christmas lunch for 8 of us so we got seated at a large long table in the middle. They had some circular tables too, which is probably a better option to keep everyone involved in the conversation.

The reception is pretty typical steakhouse styling with some dark wood and low lighting. You then walk down into a bar area with a cool black and white check tile floor. There are some high tables here and a long bar so it seems it could be a good place to pop in just for drinks. Through another door off to the side we enter the dining room which has arched brick ceilings giving a very cellar feel. There is partial exposure to the kitchen area on one wall so you get a glimpse of what is going on.

The menu is to the point – a handful of steak cut choices and the obligatory random other entrees for fish and something non-beef. Go for the beef -Obviously. They do standard cuts like a filet in 300g portions off the menu but then recommend you look to their chalkboards to order chateaubriand or porterhouse cuts. These range from 900g to 1.3kg and can be eaten by one hungry person or the chef will make some cuts into it and serve a separate dish to be split amongst 2 of you.

The sides offer 2 varieties of chips – cooked in beef drippings or the standard triple cooked. I can’t say I noticed huge differences between them but they were quite good. I went for a porterhouse which was cooked to perfection and arrived covering 95% of the white plate beneath it. It was perfect.

The pudding list also made for a tough selection. I ended up with a chocolate cake with some berries and a brandy based sauce which was equally as excellent. I could find no faults with the Hawksmoor. The service, food and drink were all very good. I would recommend it for meetings and parties for lunch time or as a good place for a special meal in the evening. It is not cheap, but you can pay a lot for bad steak at many places in London so pay a bit more and go to the Hawksmoor and get some great value for your money.
