I use a Panasonic/Lumix DMC-FZ18. It's a great camera. Hardly weighs a thing and has 18 times optical zoom.
One tip I can give you is to choose an unusual angle, as you see here or in my Eiffeltower by night photo. :)
Other than that I have two tips for you. 1) study the photos you like from others; what is it that makes you like them? Is it the light, the composition, the colours, the contrast and so on. Once you know what you like, it will be easier to make those shots yourself. 2) Always follow your heart. Shoot everything and anything you like or what you are touched by, subject wise. If you're amazed by something, take a photo. Appalled by something; take a shot. Try to find the essence of what you like about your subject (or what you are appalled by) and capture that.
Bonus tip: ALWAYS HAVE YOUR CAMERA AT HAND!!! It sounds so obvious, but always have your cam with you. You can't shoot without a camera, and you'll never know when you come across something or some situation you think is worth shooting. :D
