The Haad Tien Beach Resort Koh Tao Reviews
Seclusion on a Beautiful Cove Sep 07, 2012
Cindy did a lot of research from home on nicer places on Koh Tao. Luckily we visited off-season so the rates weren't too exorbitant but still somewhat high. Initially we opted for a "Sea Balcony" room which we would highly suggest you DON'T get as it is in a multi-story, tilt up, cement building with no character whatsoever and a short walk up some cement steps behind the kitchen with not much of a view of the property let alone the beach.
We were picked up at the Seatran Fairy by Haad Tien and shuttled off to the property, about a 10 minute, bouncy drive from the port. Keep in mind that last night, we stayed at the Uber-Luxury Conrad Koh Samui so maybe we are a little jaded...
The greeting by the office staff was not all that stellar and somewhat chaotic with a number of people all checking in at once but we think this had more to do with language issues than anything.
Walking around the property, you will see a huge, open air restaurant and a variety of different bungalow types with of course the nicest being the beach-front ones.
A great staff at the bar at the other end of the resort makes Happy Hour a fun thing. Also, the pool is really nice (although nobody is quite sure what the point of the bubbles at the far end are. It is not a jacuzzi, just bubbles in the room temperature water but still kind of fun...
After one night in the Sea Balcony room, we transferred (same price) to one of the 'Cottages" which are set back a little from the beach but have great character and charm with a big round main room, a somewhat large but funky bathroom including Hot Shower and a nicely sized deck. This was a MUCH better option than the Sea Balcony room.
All in all we had a nice stay. Other than the Sea Balcony room the only thing to complain about was the "all over the map" level of service, especially at the restaurant where sometimes we were ignored and others we were well attended to.
A couple people in particular were really helpful including Moe who is one of the baggage and driver guys who was super cool and helped me get my dead scooter running as well as carting Cindy into town to a competitive hotel when we left. Also, one of the really nice girls in reception whose name I didn't get, helped me one morning pre-scooter when we were supposed to be picked up by Crystal Dive for our first dives.
Great property with just a few tweaks and this place would rock even more.
