Historic with beautiful views, but try not to stay in older section Jan 29, 2013
Our stay at the Grove Park Inn was a mixed bag. The highlights were the beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the true feeling of staying in a historic hotel, the grand lobby with two gigantic fireplaces, and an excellent meal at one of their restaurants, Horizons. The lows mostly had to do with the fact that our room was in an old wing of the hotel. You can turn on the heat in the room when the outside temperature is below 60 degrees. I didn't find that to be a problem. But the bathroom was bizarre to say the least. You had to step up into the bathroom, which had a low ceiling, so you really had to be careful to not hit your head. The bathroom was very narrow and the tub was arranged under a sloping corner. The faucet was on the sidewall because there was no other place to put it. This would not be a good room for someone 6 feet or taller. The bed and the main room were otherwise fine. The windows could be opened for fresh air, but you had to climb high on a shelf to do so. Another annoyance is the parking. Unless you use the valet service, you will find yourself riding around winding loops far from the hotel trying to find a space and then you are in for a long walk up very steep hills. I have to say that overall we enjoyed our stay, but this hotel is definitely overpriced for North Carolina. The spa and grotto look gorgeous, but access is not included with the room fee.

Slightly overpriced but then again what isn't these days... Jan 20, 2009
The Grove Park Inn is in North Asheville, surrounded by one of the more upscale parts of town. The golf course that it sits on is well maintained and the view from the back balcony is amazing. The trees are abundant and behind the hills you can see the small skyline of buildings that downtown has to offer. You can walk down the stairs from the balcony and you'll see a decent waterfall display which lights up quite nicely after dark. Even farther from that are the pools and hot tubs. There is one outdoor pool, not too large, then there is a majestic indoor pool which circles around a stone hendge and has a waterfall coming from the ceiling. In my opinion, it's the nicest pool I've seen. There is a hot tub outside and inside, as well as a sauna and steam room. Now let's talk about the rooms. The upside to the rooms is that they are kept in their original form, which gives you a classy 1800's feel. The downside is that the rooms are small in size. If you are planning on hosting a meeting using one of their business meeting rooms, you'll be pleased with the generous size of the room. The food is found in the north wing and just south of the lobby, I don't quite remember the name of the restaurant but the price of the food was too much for the quality. I prefer to go downtown and try one of the quaint restaurants down the road from the Civic Center. Ok, back to the hotel. There are a couple shops just between the crappy, overpriced restaurant and the lobby. There is some huge deal at this hotel about a "pink lady" who leaped from the balcony of room (I think) 328 in the early 1900's. The people who work in the hotel all know its a bunch of crap but it does give an eerie sensation for anyone who stays in that particular room.
