The Grenadier London Reviews
A Haunted Pub in London Mar 14, 2010
London is filled with historic pubs, but one of my favorites, The Grenadier, is not only historic but also allegedly haunted.
Located near the Hyde Park Corner tube station, the building housing The Grenadier was constructed in 1720 and originally served as an officers mess for the Wellington Guards. Rumor has it that the pub is haunted by a soldier who was flogged to death after cheating at cards. Newspaper clippings on the wall tell of patrons who have seen the ghost. The Grenadier's ghost has even been featured in some television shows.
This pub is very small on the inside but the atmosphere is great, as military memorabilia is everywhere. There are probably no more than five or six tables around the bar. Different lagers (such as Fosters and my favorite, Stella) are available but this pub is especially known for its Bloody Marys. The Grenadier Bloody Marys are advertised as being some of the best in London (and they are very good).
In the back of the pub is a restaurant serving traditional English pub food, but the prices for dinner are a little high.
I like to come to this pub mainly because of the history and the legendary ghost. The outside of the pub is painted in the colors of the Union Jack and looks extremely patriotic with a guard house on site. This pub has been featured in travel articles and is always packed with locals and tourists any time I've visited.
One downside is The Grenadier is difficult to find as it is located at the end of a beautiful private mews. Be sure to have a good map as while this is no more than a five or ten minute walk from Hyde Park Corner, Wilton Row is a very hidden street. The first time I visited, it took me a good 45 minutes to find it.
I would recommend this pub to anyone visiting London. I like the idea of a haunted pub filled with history and the incredible Bloody Marys are definitely worth a stop.
