The Green Planet Dubai Reviews
The Indoor Rain Forest Sep 14, 2016
Dubai is pushing hard to cement it's place as the tourist destination of choice for the Middle East and the whole MENA region. There is seemingly a new attraction opening every week at the moment. Indoor theme parks, inflatable floating castles in the sea and this past week an Indoor Rain Forest.
Situated at the new City Walk development of retail and housing on the site of the old Jumeirah Prison. The Green Planet venture was opened in time for the Eid Al Adha holidays and has been advertising constantly on local radio for the past couple of weeks.
I had previously been to City Walk for a Classic Car show earlier in the year and much of it is still a building site with all the new housing developments. Signs are also still a problem and if there are any I didn't see them.
The Green Planet building I recognised from looking at the website first, a large white cube with circular windows. I paid my 95dhs entry fee, which is a little steep in my opinion and enter the building.
The centre piece is a large man made tree which towers four floors up. It has within it lots of tropical rain forest plants and birds that are free flying around you. We start in the flooded floor of the Rain Forest which is an aquarium that contains all the fish you would find in the Amazon region plus fresh water turtles and terrapins.
We take a lift to the top of the canopy and slowly descend a spiral walkway down. Lots of smaller displays show the smaller and more deadly of the rain forest creatures such as poisonous tree frogs, snakes and leaf cutter ants. Some of the less dangerous creatures are available to be handled under supervision of the staff, something the kids really enjoy.
Most of the animal and bird exhibits are rescued or donated so I'm told. The UAE has recently drafted a law banning the sale and ownership of exotic pets which is due to come into force late next year.
All in all a very enjoyable place to visit and very educational for the kids. Special rates are available for school visits.
