Police Museum in Central Manchester Sep 06, 2011
In the Northern Quarter of Manchester, there is a small, free museum dedicated to the Manchester Police force. There are two parts, some displays, and the preserved police station itself.

By far the best part is the guides, retired police officers from the Greater Manchester Police, who are full of stories about when being a police man meant no radios, let alone mobile phones, but no paperwork either.

The preserved police station is how it would have been from the late 19th and early 20th century, and is very interesting. They've tried to make the lighting right for gas light, and there is a retired police officer to tell you what everything was for (apparently, when the one talking to us started in the 1950s, it was exactly the same). There are also old cells and a small court room upstairs.

The displays include old police kit and uniforms, including old police swords from the 19th century, and the fascinating revelation that until the 1980s, women police officers were expected to do the same job as men, but with an extra small truncheon so it could fit in their police-issue smart handbag! There is also a room with relics from some of Manchester's more notable crimes, including the scaffolding poles lobbed at the police in the Strangeways riots in the 1990s. There are examples of police motorbikes.

Entrance is free. The downstairs is fully accessible, although I am not sure if people with mobility difficulties could get upstairs. The information signs are quite small and might be difficult if you have bad vision, but there are lots of guides to help you. There's dressing up and things for children.

The museum is only open on Tuesdays.
