The Great Boudhanath Stupa Nov 22, 2014
The Boudhanath is one of the largest spherical stupa and buddhist monument in the world. a stupa of the mind nature of the buddhas of three times: the past, present and the future. as kathmandu doenst have any tall buildings, the stupa dominates the skyline of the surrounding area.

since its too long for ne to write the history of the boudhnath, in summary, boudhanath is a stupa of enlightenment constructed between the periods of the kashyapa and sakhyamuni buddhas.

the boudhanath was made a UNESCO heritage site in 1979 and since then pilgrims from the buddhist world - come to do a pilgrimage.

the boudhanath stupa has different levels they are (from bottom to top):

- the mandala (the base) - the house of buddha

- dome - symbol of the universe or vase of great treasure

- two eyes - symbol of method and wisdom

- harmika - symbol of eight noble paths

- nose - symbol of nirvana

- thirteen steps - 13 states of boddhishatvas for complete enlightenment

- lotus - compassion and purity

- umbrella - protector of 3 jewels (buddha, dharma and sangha)

- pinnacle - symbol of mt. sumeru (the king of the mountains)

the festivals celebrated in the boudhanath are: mamla jatra, chechyu puja, losar, temal jatra, buddha jayanti and ropai jatra.

the area of the stupa is so vast with monasteries surrounding it. in recent times, hotels, restaurants and cafes have been built in the complex that caters to tourist and many tibetan refugees seek refuge inside it.

the power of the place for me is of magnitude i could not explain. it feels so sacred for me specially the great eyes of the buddha watching in all directions. the smell of the place - the monks and the locals and tourist circling the great stupa is a magnificent sight to behold. it is definitely my favorite place in kathmandu.
