The only 4 Star Hotel in Leh Jun 09, 2012
Inspite of Ladakh being an astonishingly beautiful place in the northern most part of India in the Himalayas , it still is not very touristy to attract big hotel chains into the region .

Finding a good modern hotel is actually quite difficult . The Grand Dragon is the only 4 star hotel in Leh , the capital of the state and there are no 5 star hotels . Our trip was going to be a tough one , first in terms of adapting to the high altitude and then a lot of traveling every day . Leh was to be our base for all travels so we were wanting to stay in the most comfortable place possible .

The Grand Dragon has a unique entrance( check out the pictures ) ... a warm and welcoming lobby and reception . The rooms are large and airy with both twin bed & double bed options . Wooden flooring , large windows and LCD screens are part of every room . The attached bathrooms are comfortable and functionally adequate . The views from the backside rooms is beautiful with the mountain ranges in sight .

They have a multi-cuisine restaurant with bright red upholstery and curtains and the food is better than average. Remember almost nothing grows in Ladakh because of the climate so everything has to come to this state from other states by truck .

If you looking for a comfortable stay in a hotel with all modern amenities , this is probably the only choice available at present .

Best Hotel In Leh Dec 11, 2012
Leh is in North India. Located at an elevation or 11,500' (about 4,000m), it is a popular launching point for excursions into the Himalayan mountains. Although only an hour flight from Delhi, the drive would take about 2 days due to the lack of good roads between the 2 cities, however, many people chose to go by road as they acclimatize to the higher elevation along the way. If you fly, as I did, then at least one full day of acclimatization is required - that means that you do nothing: read, watch movies, take naps, etc... In order to do this, you need a comfortable place to stay. On a recent business trip to Leh, I conducted significant Internet research as to where I should stay, and it was glaringly obvious that the Grand Dragon Ladakh was the best place in town. Upon arriving to the hotel, I could see that it was nicely located, safely guarded and had beautifully clean, manicured grounds. On entry, I found that the interior was just as clean and the staff was friendly and welcoming. Once I was checked in, I made it to my second floor room and was pleasantly surprised. The room was spacious, had an unbelievable view of the Himalayas, a clean bathroom and a nice big, comfortable bed. There was plenty of storage space to get fully unpacked. Since Leh is mostly a tourist destination and not so much visited for business reasons, the Wi-Fi was slow, intermittent and expensive to use. The hotel has a restaurant that is open for all 3 meals. There was a generous breakfast buffet, which is included in the room rate, and eggs could be ordered through the wait staff. Unfortunately for the coffee drinkers out there, the only option was powdered instant coffee, but different teas were available as a substitute if desired. For lunch, there is a diverse menu with plenty of western options, continental Indian, regional Indian and Chinese selections as well. The same menu is available for dinner and every night there is a decent buffet. Alcohol is not advertised, but they do sell beer on request. There is no gym, but if you are not used to the higher altitudes, than you will not need to visit one anyway. Their is no business center per se, but there is a community computer and a printer for use is needed. All-in-all, if I ever had a return trip to Leh (which I suppose I shall) I would definitely stay at the Grand Dragon again.
