The Grand Del Mar San Diego Reviews
Luxury Resort with Tuscan Feel Outside of San Diego Apr 04, 2010
I stayed at the Grand Del Mar in June 2009 for two nights. I had been to this hotel a few times for dinner and for drinks since I live nearby but I wanted to check out the rooms and stay here as a guest. I opted for the 2 bedroom Guest Suite. I had a gorgeous view of canyons, the golf course, and one of the many courtyards.
I absolutely love this hotel/resort! It has amazing views and has one of the best golf courses (in my opinion) in San Diego. If you stay here and play golf, definitely take advantage of the course. Generally this course is "Members Only" or "Hotel Guests Only". If you happen to travel here without your golf clubs they do rent clubs to guests for the day.
I gave a 5 out of 5 rating as far as location goes because it fulfilled what I was looking for as far as seclusion. It is about 25 miles Northeast of Downtown San Diego and a mere 5 miles from the beautiful beaches of Del Mar and Torrey Pines Park. It is a gated community even to get into the hotel. If you are looking for nightlife nearby this may not be the most ideal location for you unless you are driving or taking a taxi cab.
When you walk in the majority of the time there is a pianist playing. It has a very Tuscan Classical feel to it. This hotel/resort was built about 3 years ago so all of the amenities are up-to-date and clean.
The spa is very relaxing and they have a list of daily specials you can choose from for an additional price.
The restaurants are gorgeous and the food is delicious. You will not be disappointed with the fine dining aspect that the Grand Del Mar has to offer.
The resort/hotel is pretty upscale & luxurious so it may not be the best option if you are on a tight budget. However, lately when I have looked at pricing they seem to be offering some good deals. They also have guest suites that are the size of houses which would be great for a group traveling together. The Guest Rooms range from about $395 USD/Night and the Guest Suites are about $695 USD & up per night.
When you go downstairs there are wine rooms (they may need to be reserved) and another Classical pianist. Once you walk outside there is a huge grass Polo Field-like area. I really wanted to graze here all day. :)
I really do not have anything bad to say about the Grand Del Mar aside from my bathroom. It was very nice and spacious but it did not have a jacuzzi bath tub. I may sound picky, but I would usually expect something like a jacuzzi bath tub in a 2 bedroom suite--there was only a shower. This wasn't a 'deal breaker' for me, I just found it a bit unusual.
Since it isn't close to a lot of touristy things in San Diego you may have to drive a ways to see some of the heart of San Diego.
