The Golden Cirle
The Golden Cirle Reykjavik Reviews

Your options here are driving it via rental car or taking one of the several excursions offered via tour bus. All sites were free and had plenty of parking.
I drove it. Roads were easy to navigate (although a little icy in the winter) and this is the best option if you want to explore the sites. Check roads conditions first, one of the roads the guide books tell you to use (to make a complete circle) was closed because of ice and snow, but the we were still able to access all the sites via another road.
Our first stop was Pingvellir National Park. There is loads of hiking to here and the information desk was very helpful with information and maps. Free park and good observation decks.
Next stop was Geysir. They have a big gift shop, cafe and restuarant. The cafe was ok (food was decent) and fast. The site is free to view and hike around all the Geysirs. The larger Geysirs were labeled and there was a good site directory. The main large Geysir our guidebook (lonely planet) said still erupted 2-3 times a day actually doesn't explode anymore.
Gullfoss was not far from Geysir. Be prepared if you want to hike close to the falls (and you can get real close) that you will get wet from the spray. They had a cafe there as well and small gift shop. There was a hotel between this site and Geysir, but not much else. Not sure I would recommend staying as it was pretty remote, during the summer maybe would be good if you were going some seriously long hikes in the area.
Laugarvatn was another stop on the circle route. I think this may be more of a summer stop vs a winter stop. Big lake there but did not look all that interesting in the winter so we did a drive by ;-)
Kerio was out last stop. This is a quick stop to look at the crater and see the strange green water the crater has collected. For sure worth stopping quickly and looking at, very short and easy hike up to top for viewing, you can hike around it if you like.
