One of the best pubs in Brighton? Jul 31, 2017
What merits being labelled one of the best pubs in a city with more than 400 to choose from? Great atmosphere, good food, reasonable prices, excellent entertainment, friendly service and a fun crowd are all reasons why I rank the Globe as one of the finest establishments in Brighton to frequent.

What makes the Globe special is that it stands out in all of these areas and not just in a way that's slightly different to existing venues, it does all of the aforementioned brilliantly.

The drink selection is good with all the usual brands behind the bar, a good range of spirits as well as beers and wines. The prices are average for the area as well and it’s positioned close to the seafront and the town centre which make it a good 'after beach' pub to warm up in.

The menu though limited has enough choice to keep most happy. It features a lot of BBQ and 'deep south' American foods. There are also veggie options available. The quality of the food is consistently excellent and it is also reasonably priced in that regard too. The bar also serves seasonal drinks and treats in winter like mulled wine or mulled cider and for those with a sweet tooth candy canes around X-mass.

The staff are in a word great! The doorman (on Friday or Saturday nights) is always friendly and welcoming (which is a rarity for most in that profession in Brighton) as are the staff inside. Besides being friendly the bar staff are also knowledgeable and will recommend drinks or food from the menu if you're not sure what you'd like to try. If you're new to Brighton they'll also suggest places to try or just have a general chat assuming there isn’t a large queue behind the bar.

The pub is split over the ground floor and basement with a bar on each floor. The decor in here is a lot of what makes the atmosphere and has a very cosy yet trendy feel to it. Downstairs there are bookcases filled with old classic books and a large map of the world giving it an adventurous and vintage feel. Upstairs the lighting is dimmed with red paneled walls and comfy couches to give it a very personal feel. There is also a mysterious mechanical fan like contraption on the wall to the right of the bar that adds an element of mystery to the place(if you're trying to work out what is is). Good music is often playing and always at a volume where you can easily talk to your companions without having to raise your voice.

There is a large selection of games on offer here for those that want a bit of interactive entertainment during their time here. They have everything from Jenga, scrabble and chess to playing cards and connect 4. Where the Globe’s entertainment comes into its own is with the 'theme nights' downstairs; there is a 'retro' video games night the pub hosts in the basement bar most nights. They have an N64 connected to a projector with multiplayer Mario Kart on offer, there is also a Snes with Street fighter 2 and a megadrive/genesis with classic multiplayer games too.

Taking it a step even further in the entertainment dept the Globe has a weekly cinema night down stairs in the basement bar where people can watch the weeks movie on a large projection screen whilst enjoying their drinks. Popcorn is even available, although served in small plastic cups it's still a nice touch. There's also a book club that seems to gather once a week and there are also various DJ's nights downstairs. It’s also possible to book out the basement bar for a private function.

The globe is a place you could bring pretty much anyone; who depends on the time of the day and day of the week. During a Sunday afternoon there's a mix of families and regulars here to enjoy the roasts. It's an amazing place to take friends for a lazy afternoon or to begin a great Friday/Saturday night out or if you just fancy a few drinks after work. The entertainment on offer also caters if you're just stuck for something to do on a random week night. It's also a good place to bring a date for a few drinks and perhaps a meal by candle light.

To pick a single area where the Globe excels is difficult because it does in so many. If I had to advise why to go the main reasons would be the entertainment, atmosphere and generously portioned food. I would advise this is a must stop for anyone visiting Brighton or anyone living here that has never been before.
