Affordable great way to meet some new people. Aug 14, 2011
July 2009

Honestly I want to rate this place excellent. I slept dormitory style that had 10 bunk beds and stayed with girls from around the world I did not know but got to know and made friends with. It is affordable at $45 through Gershwin Hotel website or go to expedia and you can get it for $35. There is only 1 bathroom in the room to 10 girls but the bunch I was with we had no problems. If you are a light sleeper bring ear plugs because people come in and go out of the room at all hours. If you are looking for an interesting experience and only need a bed and bathroomand are on a tight budget this is a place to go. I think even if I was a millionare I'd still stay here because I just had so much fun!

I re-vist NYC and once again stay at The Gershwin. OH MY! So some changes...still in a great location lol and now The Gershwin has a great little coffee shop where one can also purchase some other yummy stuff. Nice new lobby and a cute little library where you can sit, sip on coffee and read a good book or converse with new friends you met at the hotel. First time I stayed at The Gershwin it was an all girls room however, this time I stayed in a room mixed with girls and guys lets just say some silly went on when one guy stayed in bed forever in the morning b/c of all the nudity of females changing within the same room which, created an extra time length of how long his morning wood would end up lasting. Beds seemed extra creaky and the room was very hot. The window close to my bed was broken and tape was on it I suppose as someone poor attempt for a quick fix. I still recommend this hotel/hostel and plan to go back to it in the future but I hope that a few things get corrected.

Artsy hotel in central Manhattan Aug 07, 2011
The Gershwin hotel is centrally located in Manhattan, close to Madison park and the Flatiron building. It is easy to find because from the outside it has a very recognizable front. The building is red and there are lamps on the outside that are shaped like water drops sliding down the building. Also the entrance is quite distinctive, with more wave-like shapes above the doors. Right next to the hotel, there is the Museum of Sex.

This artsy theme on the outside can also be found on the inside of the hotel. The rooms and hallways are artfully decorated, and the rooms themselves have big prints of Picassos. The rooms are a bit old though and I feared that the cramped elevator would break down. We had a room where we could pay for two beds and have an extra bed rolled into the room, but this extra bed was of course very tiny. This is not such a good option.

I was afraid that it would be very noisy to spend the night in this central area of Manhattan, but if you get a room on the upper floors, the noise falls away. It can be very hot here in summer, but the rooms have air-conditioning. The location of the hotel is quite good because it is in between the more hectic areas, but you’ll still need to make use of the metro to get anywhere quickly. The hotel is a low-budget option with some character.

Funky and Fun Apr 20, 2010
The staff was super nice! They answered any and all questions my mom and I had about getting around. They shared local places to eat with us and had good conversation! I'd recommend it just for the staff alone, but The Gershwin is also filled with art, art, art! Love it! My room had a giant photo of Pablo Picasso (framed) floating above the head board. The sconces above the doors are little boxes with funky designs and wings. Just a total unique atmosphere! Met some people stranded from the volcano... I'd say it's a good place to stay in that situation.

I dream about coming back... Dec 28, 2008
My mom and I went in October 2008 - first trip to NYC and we loved this hotel. It was so bright and cheerful, with two subway lines located close by (the 6 and the R/W) with tons of small restaurants/shops/vendors for cheap eats. The rooms are CLEAN, staff is great, and price is too for Midtown Manhattan. My only complaint - and it would be small - would be all the smokers out front but it caters to the Euro crowd so expect it.

I love this far in advance though!

The Gershwin Hotel in New York City Jan 24, 2006
I stayed at this hotel when I was in New York City in January 06, with my father. This is a good place for people who don't ask for much in the way of a room. Our room was very basic, comprised of two twin beds a TV and a small bathroom w/ shower. The decor is pretty modern with many Andy Warhol photos. If you want to be in the middle of Manhattan and you're traveling on a budget this is a great place to stay. All we wanted was a place to sleep, because with all of Manhattan right out the door we didn't want to stay cooped up in our hotel room the whole time. They offer everything from Family suites to bunk beds for the ones on a tight budget. The hotel also has a restaurant but they are still waiting for the permits. You shouldn't need their restaurant anyway because there are so many paces to eat near by. We just ordered take-out from a Chinese restaurant down the street that was pretty good. The location was pretty good. It's right off Broadway and just a couple of blocks from a subway station. There are lots of things to do right around the hotel. It is also right around the corner from the Museum of Sex if anyone is interested in that lol. All in all it was the right hotel for my father and I. Just don't go expecting to have all the finest because you aren't going to find it at this Hotel. But if you are just looking for a place to sleep in a good environment then this hotel should be a good fit.
