Gearhart is a largely residential community, quite distinct from the commercial hustle and bustle of neighboring Seaside. Wealthy Portlanders built some substantial abodes in Gearhart and many of them remain today. There's a certain standoffish attitude to the place. At one time, the Hood to Coast Relay, a wonderful sporting event enjoyed by some ten thousand people each year, ended with a loop through Gearhart. But the locals didn't like the commotion, probably too many people breathing too hard, and complained, so the organizers devised another route that wound through more of Clatsop County while keeping the same distance and not interrupting the folks in Gearhart.
