Why Uganda is referred to as the Fruit Basket of Africa Apr 16, 2011
Uganda is well known for it's tropical climate. It is this climate that encourages the growth of tropical fruits and vegetables used by the population. The innumerable fruits grace the many markets and roadside stands as one walks through the city of Kampala or in the countrysides where fruits and vegetables are grown in plenty.

Uganda is the only country in Eastern Africa that produces the amounts of fresh fruits it has annually. From bananas, pineapples, mangoes, oranges, kiwi, water melons, papaya, coconuts, passion fruits, guavas, tangerines, jack fruits, to mention but a few. Through the years, the foreigners that have visited the country, have called it the "fruit basket of Africa". One only has to walk throught the streets or visit the markets to understand why. Even though Uganda does not export it's fruits, it's economy is greatly enhanced by the production and consumption of the fruits by it's populus.

PS: Why leave for tomorrow what you can accomplish today?

Christian, you are much too kind. I do love fruits too. I grew up in the tropics so naturally I tend to love the right colours of fruits, not to mention the freshness of them. Thank you for the compliment, much appreciated. Happy 2011, hopefully we can meet this year.
