The Fortress of St John
The Fortress of St John Kotor Reviews
The views in Kotor May 09, 2015
The path up to the Fortress of St John snakes up the hillside behind the Kotor's old town to provide fantastic views of the city and bay.
The main access point is in the old town itself, near the north/river gate. Entry tickets cost three euros (a bargain compared to Dubrovnik's ten euro entry to the town walls).
The ascent was very steep, even taking into account the switch back route and taking a bottle of water is recommended. Though, if you forget there are plenty of vendors along the route who will sell you a bottle for two euros.
The views were spectacular, both down into the town and across the bay. And the mountain side in early May was bursting with wild flowers; beautiful purple irises, poppies and a host of others that I did not recognise.
The ascent took over an hour, but was very enjoyable as there was plenty of opportunity to pause to get your breath back and enjoy the views which got better and better as we climbed. I was especially taken with the cruise liner which looked impossibly large within the confines of the bay, like it had been placed in a bath tub!
When we finally reached the top we were rewarded with panoramic views and a proudly flying Montenegrin flag.
The descent was much quicker; about twenty minutes.
