A village on water Mar 30, 2008
A floating village is an amzing place to see how humans are able to modify themselves to live in this lovely plannet! At floating village, I came across nearly 200-300 houses built on wodden platform and some on old boats, tied up at the bottom of the lake. My car driver/guide told me that the lake is a largest in southern hemisphere and it take 6 hours to cross from one end to other. The villagers had created their own employment opportunities by means of showing how they live in their amazing floating houses. Every day hundreds of boats carry thousands of tourists to show their floating village. Tourist can see their houses closely as well they can see daily livings in their village depending upon what time of their visit. The village has its own floating school, visiting clinic, visiting shop, bar/club. Those who have no idea how this floating village is, then check the photos...

going through the river was quite a different experience from the past few days. we were guided to our motor boat and before we knew it, we were cruising leisurely along the river. along the sides there were all these boat houses with people living offshore. there's even a school for the kids above water. people paddled beside us, trying to sell us fruits and baskets. halfway through, we were even "hijacked" by a sampan which went right beside us. a little girl on the sampan just jumped right up to our boat and, carrying a small basket of canned drinks, proceeded to sell them to us. she was a very very beautiful girl of maybe 7 and i wonder, how many such girls are still around leading such tough lives?

…but you may need to hire taxi going to other attractions outside Ankor Wat (like Tonley Sap Lake, Hidden Waterfalls, Kbal Spean River, Chong Kreas Floating Village, Killing Fields, Kampung Khleang, Phnom Bakhen, etc) around S$60 per taxi, seems expensive but worth it coz it’s whole day ;) Ankor Wat Archeological Park entrance for 1 day is S$30 Cheaper if you get 3 days (or 1 week… ANKOR WAT - Siem Reap, Cambodia (February 2009) |
