The Equator Monument in Pontianak West Borneo Apr 03, 2013
The Equator Monument is the monument where the NOL Point (0°0'0" ) of equator line located. The monument is placed in Pontianak city in West Borneo-Indonesia, 3 km or 10 minutes from the Supadio Airport to the west. It is a very simple monument, signed by two circles of equator line with an arrow inside. It has green building with clean and simple garden nearby Kapuas river, the biggest river in West Borneo.

It is quite hot outside but warm inside the building. It is free charge to enter the monument with warm welcome greetings from the government staffs in there. They just asked me to write the name, where I come from and the comment about this place. It is a very nice greeting. Some pictures and data information hang out about the finding of this location in 1928.

As informed in this monument actually the précised NOL point at the moment has been moved about 117 meters from the monument closed by Kapuas river, still around the monument just moved little bit.

The great moment in this equator monument is the equinox moment which happens twice a year (21-23 March and 21-23 September). It is the sun culmination moment where the sun will be precisely in the equator point coordinated 0°0'0", no shadow for about 5 minutes at that moment. I missed that moment. I came there on the way to Singkawang city, one day before the equinox moment happened

I would have loved to see this place! I remember when I was on Garuda Airways flying from Bangkok to Jakarta, the cabin crew gave all the passengers a certificate when the plane crossed the Equator line. Unfortunately, in between all the years of moving (and traveling) from country to country I've lost my certificate!
