The Elizabethan Gardens adjoin Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island, NC. There is a separate admission fee to enter the gardens ($8 for adults when I went). Various paths meander through gardens set up to approximate the English gardens of the Elizabethan Age. Highlights include a large marble statue of the queen, a sunken garden with a fountain and statuary from Renaissance Italy, some nice views of Roanoke Sound, and an ancient oak tree that was alive at the time of the Lost Colony in the 1580s.

The gardens were established in the 1950s as a tribute to the Lost Colonists. A short visit to Roanoke Island can easily incorporate the gardens and Fort Raleigh next door, though adults would probably enjoy both places more than their children. Plants are sold at the visitors center for gardening enthusiasts.
