The Eagle's Nest Berchtesgaden Reviews
No Photos Can Ever Do Justice to a Place Like This Nov 05, 2014
Whilst staying in Salzburg I decided to take a day trip to Berchtesgaden in Germany to see the former retreat of Adolf Hitler 'The Eagles Nest'.
These days the Eagles Nest is used as a restaurant and can be visited from May to late October.
From Salzburg it takes around 90 minutes in total to get to Berchtesgaden. There are tour groups that you can get from Salzburg but if like me you'd rather do it solo then the trip is easy to plan as the bus system in Salzburg is very straight forward. If you google 'obb travel portal' you can check bus times and work out your journey quite easily. The only bus numbers you'll need to remember are #840 and #838. #840 gets you to the documentation center in Berchtesgaden and #838 gets you the Eagles nest.
When you arrive you take an elevator to the top of the mountain (around 6000ft up).
The day I went it was very cloudy which only added to the beauty of the place. I definitely think I would have preferred clouds over a clear day. As I stepped out of the elevator, through the restaurant and outside I was in awe of how magical the views were. No photos can ever do justice to a place like this.
There was quite a few people there but most of them were on a tour group and seemed to have to leave 10 minutes after arriving, so as I said earlier, make your own way there and take your time enjoying the views.
Once outside you are free to explore wherever you want. Take caution though as there is minimum/no fencing, sheer drops and loose rocks. It was amazing how the clouds were caught in the surrounding valleys, at one point they parted to reveal a large lake, almost like a lake in the clouds.
There were times when the clouds completely engulfed the mountain and Eagles nest and it was a complete whiteout for a minute of two, which was very cool. Just don't go stepping out onto rocks when you can't see otherwise they might not be there and its a long way down.
The restaurant itself was nice and the staff were pleasant. I had some tea to warm me up and ice cream to cool me back down.
I cannot recommend this place enough. Its stunning, breathtaking and a must-do if your anywhere within distance (especially if your in Salzburg). A definite 5 star experience.
