The Durham Kingston Reviews
The Durham Mar 20, 2011
I am the only game in town!
Words of the hostel/guesthouse owner tell you everything about travel situation in Kingston.
We came from Treasure Beach to only guest house in Kingston that is acceptable on budget travels. We paid $20 each for one room with one huge and one smaller bed.
The Durham guesthouse is on the hill above the city, close to US embassy, in totally residential area. It is actual living quarters of the owner, his wife, and super nice kids. We had collectivo transport taking us there, so I am not sure what the prices to go around are, but it is not as cheap as other places.
You arrive to the one floor house with large garden, surrounded by fence. Security is large issue in Kingston, and these guys did good job with bars and locks. Living room is spacious, connected to nice kitchen and has lots of chairs and tables. Internet is wireless with good signal, there is TV with lots of movies and they also offer laundry service.
Highlight of the place is a garden behind the house, with lots of nice big trees, bar, and hanging area with large beds and cover. Smoking is prohibited in the house, but outside is actually preferred.
Drink prices are very close to the store prices, and they are cold and nice. Jamaican beer “Red Stripe” is must have in your hand at all times (aside of restroom and bedroom), and that is the law, so you see how you are going to deal with it.
There are lots of rooms, and few garden dwellings, and all of them are kind of private rooms with 2-3 beds. Feeling is like you are at your home, because all around you are stuff from the family, books, shoes, stuff, homework … You constantly interact with family because you are in their living area, but they are totally used to lots of people, and it won’t be any problem. There are few books with lots of things that you can do in Kingston and surrounding area. Those “books” are cutouts, offers, and transportation deals for other cities, Blue Mountain… and they are totally cool.
Surrounding area is the most secure in Kingston, and that is not joke, considering that few districts are totally out of limits for strangers and even for police. That is a bit of annoyance because you can’t really enjoy the city harbor area, and are limited to the New Kingston and few Americanized café’s/bars/clubs. Supermarket is close to the hostel and it is well supplied, and also there is shopping mall close by with some services, and ok restaurants. Bob Marley’s museum is also walking distance from the guesthouse, but remembers that it is very hot during the day, and rain from Blue Mountain comes fast and stops the same way. Main bus station for smaller buses is not close for walking, and collectivo taxi will take $1 per person and maybe some extra for your bags to take you there. Buses are often overcrowded, and drivers are maniacs, but you have to live with it. Hopefully you don’t have motion sickness.
There are no other serious/safe options in Kingston for backpackers, aside of hotels and resorts
