A Memorable Martini Oct 07, 2013
Although The Dukes is actually an exclusive boutique hotel, their bar is quite a famous attraction by itself. Frequented by Ian Flemming, the creator of James Bond, his dislike of the way they prepare their Martinis is said to have sparked his idea for 007's preference to have his Martinis shaken and not stirred. Of course the major draw here is the Martini. Although they do have a nice selection of unique Martini choices, they are best known for a standard: either a vodka or gin, with your choice of label. I would highly recommend, even for the non-fans as I am, that you order one just for gimmick's sake; I ordered a Hendricks (gin) Martini. Since this is their major draw, your waiter will make quite a show of the creation of your standard Martini. They start by rolling out a cart which has on it, your label choice (frosty from being stored in the freezer), your frozen Martini glass, a bottle of dry vermouth and a basket of imported Almalfi lemons. The finely crafted cocktail is then made table side. What is always amazing to me is how such a simple cocktail can be so hard to make well. The Dukes Hotel bar has mastered it. As you sip on your strong yet refreshing Martini, you will be enjoying the quaint setting of the post-colonial styled hotel featuring small rooms with warm decor, with every inch of wall space occupied by period paintings. If you are in a group of more than 2 people, you will definitely need to make a reservation as it does fill up quite quickly. You will also need to be aware of the fact that The Dukes is quite expensive - you will pay about 18 pounds ($27) per cocktail, so if you are on a busget, you may want to move along to a more affordable pub after you enjoy your one Martini. Luckily, each drink has the equivalent of 4 shots in it so you will be well on your way to the good times ahead.
