Great Buddha of Kamakura Nov 03, 2014
I highly recommend visiting The Great Buddha of Kamakura and Kamakura itself. There is Hase-dera (buddhist temple) nearby too and you can make this an all day trip with visitation to Enoshima Island. This buddha is not as big as the one in Nara but I think its more beautiful with its color and being outdoor. You can also pay extra to actually go inside the great buddha. Getting to Kamakura is easy as transportation in Japan will pretty much take you anywhere.

This is an excellent place to visit. A giant statue made of all metal, inside hollow! You may expect a solid idol, but u could go inside and see the different pieces of metal bolocks.

The Daibutsu was made in 1252 A.D. and it weighs 121 tons. It survived a tidal wave in 1494 that washed the foundation away and in 1923 the base was once again damaged but the Buddha made it through that also. It is one strong Daibutsu.

I made the mistake of visiting the Daibutsu during 'golden week'. It was crowded and I had to struggle to get a picture without anyone in it. On a normal day it would not have been as crowded. However, even with the crowd the Buddha was a sight to see. For a couple of extra cents you are allowed to inside the Buddha. If you have a problem with small places, I would advise against entering. There is nothing to see but for the extra 20 cents it is fun to say that you went in side.

If you are in Kamakura and you did not see the Daibutsu then you did not experience Kamakura to the fullest. It is a site not to miss.

While visiting Tokyo, try taking a short day trip to Kamakura. It's not too far from Tokyo, but definitely a cool place to visit. Visit the Daibutsu or Giant Buddha. There is another park close by, where you can purchase feed and feed the wild squirrels... I guess this might appeal more to girls than anything, but nonetheless, a fun experience altogether.
