Beautiful and inspiring Jan 04, 2014
I had known about a place near Amarillo, TX where life-size statues of the Via Crucis (the Passion of Our Lord) could be admired and I had wanted to visit it for years. This probably wasn't the best time of the year to do so, but we were there, so we decided to give it a chance.

It was an extremely windy day (which I guess it's not uncommon in the desolated lands of Amarillo), so we could barely make it outside. We went through all the stations and took a few pics and had to get inside of the car. It was an apocalyptic wind that was blowing and to me it looked honestly as if the devil was trying to prevent me from visiting those images.

This is a truly inspiring place, and even more when you learn about the story of how the statues were made. It happens that the sculptor, Mickey Wells, was tired of all the I guess inappropriateness of many of the spectacular ads in the area (and in the country) and decided to make a public statement of faith by casting the statues and then donating them to the public. The cross and the statues are located in a privately owned land, to protect it from the growingly Christianophobic government. Drivers can see the cross from miles away and stop to admire the beautiful stations.

There is also a gift shop that we didn't have the chance to see. This is a truly beautiful place to see if you are driving by, specially if you are a Christian. Totally recommended.

Meet me at the "Cross" May 25, 2012
Ok, this is just one of those ‘must see’ places in Texas. The 19 story cross was placed here along highway 40 in Groom Texas which is about 70 miles away from Amarillo, by a very wealthy Christian who wanted to do more with his money than spend it on himself. The area is a nice park with life-sized statues of the story of Jesus, the 19 story cross, which can be seen for miles, and a gift shop. The best way to experience this is to visit the site, but if you are not able to, I would say go to their website, Here you will find all kinds of information that will only strengthen your faith. There is a short video documenting the entire project. Take a look at some of these photos and you will understand why this is a great gift for everyone.

The life-sized bronze artwork is just stunning. I can’t even begin to say which is my favorite, but the one of Jesus being held by his mother and the empty tomb are great. I loved it and hope you will as well.

We went past here in 2008 on our roadtrip. Got several shots. Maybe we should add a review ourselves. Pretty impressive! :D

One of the tallest crosses in the country May 12, 2008
Located in a very small community along Highway 40, the old Route 66, this is one of several very large crosses constructed around the country. This one includes a gift shop and several statues which were not yet completed when we visited in 2008. This one is only 190 feet tall, but there is one in Effingham, Illinois that has been built since and is 198 feet tall. But the tallest in the country seems to be one in St Augustine, Florida, erected back in 1966. It is 260 feet tall.

The one in Groom came about from a donation from one very rich man who had it built in two locations several miles away and trucked to the building site and erected there.

I am not a religious person, but stopped and took pictures because it was unusual and different. The cross is quite large and the scultures are very nicely done.
Just a couple of turns and we'd be…
