The Croft Institute Melbourne Reviews
Feel like a scientist Sep 08, 2013
The Croft Institute was another bar that drew me to it in Melbourne purely due to its unusual theme/gimmick.
The bar is designed and made to feel like a laboratory science room. Lining the room are glass cases filled with various scientific equipment and instruments. The wall at the back of the bar has tonnes of different liquors from all over the world along with more science gear. The main draw for me with the place was i heard they give you a plastic syringe (without the needle, obviously!) to drink your cocktails from.
The drinks range from $6 to about $10.
This place is located down a really dark alley and it has a very unassuming entrance so make sure if you go there you have a map or know exactly where you are going.
We liked it because it was different and interesting and the bar man was extremely helpful, friendly and knowledgeable on drinks and cocktail concoctions but the overall feel and atmosphere in the place, as much as they try and make it homey and comfortable by lighting candles and dimming the lights, is quite cold and stark, like a lab!

An interesting place Nov 29, 2012
If you are looking for an interesting laneway bar, then this is the place to go.
You make a turn off Little Burke Street down Croft Lane which at night is kinda creepy. After turning a couple of corners you find The Croft Institute at the very end.
It would be very hard to stumble upon this place, as there are not many people who would walk down a dead end laneway like this at night unless you knew something was there.
Croft Lane also shows off some of Melbourne’s street art/graffiti that it is famous for.
There are 3 levels and each of them has something interesting on offer. The ground floor includes a bar and is set out like a science lab. The 1st floor is where the bathrooms are located. The second floor is set out as a gymnasium, with a big screen showing wacky movies and also has a DJ. You will also find grass growing on the bar.
Definitely a place to check out while in Melbourne.
