Good Local Burger Joint in San Antonio Dec 10, 2012
I'm a fan of the Food Network show, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives as hosted by Guy Fieri. So, before a recent trip to San Antonio, Texas, where else would I turn for recommendations for local secrets? One of the places that turned up was The Cove, a famous local burger and fish taco joint on the outskirts of the city. More of a lunch establishment, my wife and I set aside a day for it and took a cab to West Cypress Drive. Not knowing the area, The Cove is about 10 minutes NW of downtown SA and is not in the best area, however, this place was PACKED when we go there with quite the diverse crowd, from suit clad businessmen to moms with kids to students from the local university. It is actually located in a laundromat and car wash, although I think the same owner owns all three as a "value-added" 3-in-1 establishment. There is tons of seating along with a large beer garden that is open in the evenings and on weekends and there is no sit down service - you stand in a line and order your food, then a waitress brings your order to your seat on identification of your issued order number. The menu is quite unique and focuses mainly on the fish tacos and burgers, but there are other things on the menu either for the parents with picky kids (or for the picky adults). Since we went there on Guy's recommendation to try the burgers, that what we ordered. We went a little more traditional as many of the burgers on the menu were gourmet and broke the mold a bit. All-in-all, I thought the burger was good to above average, but not excellent as Guy led me to believe. I didn't care for the sweet bun, but the homemade French fries were really good as were the artisan sodas they had on tap. I think out of curiosity I would go back to give it another try, but a second strikeout would cause me not to return due to the inconvenient location. If you are in the area, you should try it. 75% grade in my book.

I like trying out restaurants Guy Fieri has been to, too, and usually they aren't as what they're hyped up to be on tv.
