CHARLESTON

Historic Charleston City Market

Located at 188 Meeting Street

A plaque outside the Market Building reads:

"On this site stands one of Charleston's oldest public facilities in continuous use. The CHARLESTON CITY MARKET. Earlier markets, dating back to the city's relocation to the Peninsula, ca.1880, offered meat, fish and vegetables at different sites. After the American Revolution, however, the city sought to consolidate this activity in one location and chose the present site, which was then a creek and marsh extending from Meeting Street to the Cooper River, briefly designated canal or Channel Street."

I wandered inside this huge building which is at least two city blocks long, and there were lots of stalls selling local art, crafts, pottery, jams and jellies, soaps, sweetgrass baskets, candles and jewellery and much more.

The building also houses the "Daughters of the Confederacy Museum" . Here you will find flags - uniforms - swords and other Confederate related items.

A bit about Charleston

The oldest and second largest city in the south eastern state of South Carolina, CHARLESTON is located on Charleston Harbor, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean.

Founded in 1670 as Charles Towne, in honor of King Charles II of England.

Known for its rich history and well-preserved architecture.

History bluffs will love the Old Plantations and numerous historical museums dedicated to the Civil War and the Old South.

The Charleston area has Historic Forts such as Fort Maultree, on Sullivan's Island and Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor.

Charleston is home to one of the largest and best preserved historic districts in America - including:

Aiken-Rhett House (ca.1820) - 48 Elizabeth Street

Nathaniel Russell House (ca. 1808) - 51 Meeting Street

Edmondston-Allston House - 21 East Battery

Drayton Hall - 3380 Ashley River Road

Joseph Manigault House - 350 Meeting Street

Citadel Square Baptist Church - 328 Meeting

Trinity United Methodist Church - 273 Meeting

Old City Market - between Meeting and East Bay Street

I picked up the brochure "Charleston's Museum Mile" at the Tourist Information Center. There are 6 Museums - 9 Historic Sites and a dozen historic places of worship - all in an easy one mile walk along Meeting Street. This is the area we concentrated more on as it was such a nice walk with so many things to see.

Nice to see Aug 23, 2008
We really like this. We knew it would consist of walking and could get

expensive. After all it is a market. We do much better on our own,

finding and exploring the antics of where we go. However, the vendors

that we talked to were very nice and helpful. They instructed us on the

best tours they liked and were to go. I also got my first anklet there.

The only question we had is, does everyone make baskets there?
