Amazing History - Amazing views Jul 29, 2009
The Citadel is situated in the capital Victoria on a flat topped hill overlooking the rest of this small island.

The building itself dates back to the early 17th Century and was once used as a refuge against attacks from pirates and Turks. However, the majority of the citadel was reduced to rubble due to an earthquake back in 1693. Today there is still ongoing restoration work on the north side of the Citadel.

As you walk around the interior of the Citadel you come across many small attractions including statues that are set into the Citadel's walls, coats of arms, arched windows and huge cannons.

Views from the top of the Citadel are amazing and from the southern section of the ramparts are imposing views over Victoria and on a clear day, the island of Malta can also be seen. From the other sections of the ramparts there are magnificent views of the Gozo countryside.

Within the Citadel walls are other attractions which include:

Gozo Cathedral (The Cathedral of Assumption)which is a gorgeous Baroque building situated at the very front of the Citadel. Mosaics adorn the floor area of this beautiful building and although the ceiling inside the cathedral is flat the wonderful artwork adorning the ceiling gives the actual impression that the roof is domed, something that definitely needs to be seen.

The Cathedral is open Mon-Sat 10am-1pm and 1.30pm-4.30pm.

The Museum of Archaeology - located just inside and to the right of the main entrance.

Opening times: Mon-Sun 9am-5pm

Folklore Museum - situated within the Citadel walls on Milite Bernardo Street on the left as you walk towards the hilltop.

Opening times: Mon-Sun 9am-5pm

The Prison - located on the higher level of the Citadel overlooking Cathedral square.

Opening times: Mon-Sun 9am-5pm

Law Courts and Armoury

Natural Science Museum - located to the rear of the Law courts.

Opening times: Mon-Sun 9am-5pm

St Joseph's Chapel - situated on Triq San Guzepp, this beautiful little chapel could be mistaken for a house due to it being so small, however, the alter and artwork should not be missed.

To take in all the sights and attractions it would be advisable to set a couple of hours aside to take in the magnitude of this wonderful piece of architecture and history.
