A humanitarian diplomat May 23, 2010
Chiune Sugihara was a admirable diplomat. Japan was an ally of Germany during the Second World War. But Chiune was in defiance of the Japan government at that time, he issued 6,000 transit visas for Jewish refugees at his discretion in Kaunas, Lithuania. Recently his great achievement was recognized by the public. In 2000 The Chiune Sugihara Memorial Hall was built in his hometown Yaotsu. Public transportation in Yaotsu is very poor, so there were very few tourists visit that memorial hall. It's a pity I couldn't take pictures inside the building.

Yuiko, I remember Chiune Sugihara from my visit to his museum in Kaunas. He was one of the real hero's of the second world war. To probably very badly quote JK Rowling 'It is difficult to stand up to your enemies, but far harder to stand up to your friends..'
Shame it is visited by so few.

Good to know there are such people in the world that are willing to make a personal sacrifice for others.
