Intricate carvings Dec 05, 2014
This temple was built in 1117 AD by Vishnuvardhana to commemarate Hoysala victory over Cholas. This temple fuses North Indian and South Indian architecture: Shikharas or curved towers from the North and columned mandapas from the South.

The carvings are the most intricate I have seen in my life and the only words to use is "exquisite". It is situated a mere 4 hours car ride from Bangalore which makes it an attractive destination for those visiting India and wanting to partake history and architecture without sacrificing convenience.

A potential itinerary could be Belur, Hallebid and Sravana Belogla. A slightly longer but more diverse itinerary could be Belur, Hallebid, Sravana Beloga, Srirangapatnam, Rangabithu, Kabini, Mysore.

Another overflow of beauty! Sep 27, 2008
Before Halebid became capital of the Hoysala Empire in the 12th century, Belur was the most important city. The Chennakesava Temple remembers of this period in time with a similar wealth of sculptural details.

The temple at Belur is at least as impressive as the Hoysaleswara temple in Halebid. The walls of this temple are also completely covered in an endless variety of depictions from Hindu mythology, animals, birds and dancing figures. But it does appear as if the inside of the temple at Belur is more noticeable than the one in nearby Halebid.

Fact is, is that the temple at Belur is larger, but for me it is impossible to say which one is more beautiful or interesting. I visited both and advise to do the same!
