The Chairlift Assmannshausen Reviews
Jun 18, 2007
The chair lift at Assmanshausen provides an interesting contrast to it's sister over at Rudesheim around the corner. Rather than the more unusual gondolas used there, here they have the more usual two person open chairs that leave you completely open to the elements (should anything elemental be happening).
Starting on the brow of the hill, just below a sizeable looking hotel cum lodge the chairlift glides down through the wooded hillside towards the river. Whereas the route at Rudesheim is low and shallow over the vines, this is much steeper and feels considerably higher as you pass between the tree tops.
As with all cable cars it's a very quiet and peaceful way to travel with only the slight rattle of the wheels pulling the cable to keep you company.
As it approached the town below you emerge from the trees only to travel the last portion through the houses on the outskirts. Obviously I don't mean through the houses themselves – that would be silly – but you are pretty much travelling through their gardens, only a few feet away from their windows in some cases which all seemed a bit odd!
