I stayed in the backbackers section and it was terrrible. It was the first hostel I've ever stayed at that I felt the need to lock up my belongings. The AC was leaking all over the place so half of the beds in the room were soaking. The room was incredibly dirty. The location wasn't that great, because it was too far from the action, since Darwin isn't the best place for a single female traveler to be walking around at night. The staff weren't very pleasant people either. Definitely have had better.

sleezy hotel, good location Oct 10, 2010
We were staying 2 nights in The Cavenagh Hotel. Situated in the city centre of Darwin. As we arrived at the hotel a band turned out to be playing at the terrace. That loud that you had to point out your name on a list at the reception. No vocal communication.

The next morning the reception had no information about ‘things to do’. They pointed out a office next door (selling excursions), but had no clue about the office hours. The reception did provide a map and pointed out the bus station.

Restaurants and shopping ‘around the corner’. The hotel has a restaurant too.

The hotel is situated around a pool. The rooms overlooking the pool are dorms for backpackers. The hotel rooms are mostly indoor rooms (no window, only a skylight). I happened to be lucky and had a room on the first floor with a window (above the drive of a bottle shop, somewhat noisy!). No elevator.

Room with a/c. Flat screen television. Coffee and tea maker. Fridge.

Not very clean (stains on the tapestry, floor of the bathroom dirty). I noticed one cockroach. Fellow guests (in the rooms without a window) noticed a bunch of them.

Ewww, a cockroach. Oh that doesn't sound good at all. Did you end up staying both nights or did you move to another hotel??
