The Castle Bed & Breakfast Ocracoke Reviews
Great place to stay, even during the off-season on Ocracoke Island in the North Carolina Outer Banks Feb 20, 2006
We decided to try going to Ocracoke Island in the North Carolina Outer Banks during the off-season in February 2006 for President's Day Weekend, since we did not have to take military leave for our visit to our favorite island and beach on the East Coast!
We stayed at the luxury lakeside cottages of The Castle Bed & Breakfast at Silver Lake. The room was great! Warm and comfy for the winter with a good heat pump which we needed. The view from our porch was amazing and the historic town of Ocracoke is all within easy walking distance. There were only about 3 places open to eat, including Howard's Pub with over 300 beers available and is even open during hurricanes year-round.
HISTORY OF THE CASTLE B&B FROM THE WEBSITE:
The Castle on Silver Lake was built over a long period of time during the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s by Sam Jones of Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Jones contributed greatly to the economy of Ocracoke, North Carolina, during these times and is considered by many to be a local legend. He is buried on Ocracoke Island with his favorite horse Ikey D at Springer's Point. Most of the original furnishings have long been auctioned off and are scattered all over Ocracoke Island and North Carolina.
According to the website in 2007 the Castle was taken over by new owners. We are not sure if that will improve the communication with the Inn Keeper who lives locally, but we had a hard time finding anyone to check out despite arringing a check-out meeting time in advance under the previous ownership.
Still, a great place to stay for a B&B! We liked Berkley Manor better, but that place was closed due to hurricane damage in 2005. Both The Castle and Berkley Manor (and one other private residence) were all built by the same guy, Sam Jones.
Stay at The Castle B&B for lakeside luxury on Ocracoke!
