The Castle & Ball Hotel Marlborough Reviews
A perfectly located gem.. Jun 15, 2011
I've stayed at this hotel twice and have generally been really impressed with it. Marlborough is a place containing a great deal of history and this hotel fits in well with its surroundings.
It is ideally located on the main high street of Marlborough and so it's a great place to stay to visit the shops and local area. The hotel itself has a restaurant which has some very nice dishes at price some might consider expensive. Nevertheless, if you don't eat here there is a whole high street of other restaurants to choose from!
The rooms were well kept, clean and quite spacious. I seem to remember the corridor floors being quite uneven which certainly gave it character. I'd recommend this place to people passing through Marlborough as it is a good base for local travel. It is surrounded by local shops and is within walking distance of Marlborough Common. It is quite expensive though but you are paying extra for location!

Delightful coaching inn Nov 27, 2011
I booked a room at the Castle & Ball after searching for hotels in the Marlborough area on the web. I much prefer to stay in the more characterful independent hotels than the large corporate chains.
Situated on the charming high street in the centre of Marlborough the hotel is easy to find and well located. Marlborough high street is notable for being the widest high street in Great Britain and the hotel is an old coaching inn which dates back to the 15th century.
The room I was given was the only room located in an annex across the car park from the main hotel and it felt rather more like a private suite because if it. On entering the room you walk into a small hallway with a built in wardrobe and the bathroom off to the right. The room itself was generously sized and full of character. French windows at the back of the room looked out onto a delightful garden which added to the feel of this being private, although the garden may turn out to be popular in the summer months and this may be slightly more intrusive than it was on the dark autumn night when I stayed.
The room was warm and cosy, and clean and bright, apart from a rather badly stained window blind in the bathroom which appears to get wet regularly from the adjacent shower. The shower incidentally was excellent.
The pub and restaurant section of the hotel is clearly very popular. It was particularly busy on the night I stayed as it was the night of the big Marlborough Christmas light switch on. I ate in the restaurant and unfortunately the fact that is was so busy meant that service suffered, and I waited almost an hour for the steak I had ordered to arrive. However I have to say it was worth the wait because the meal was superb. The included breakfast was also top quality, I had scrambled egg with smoked salmon and it was first rate.
The hotel has it's own private car park which was extremely welcome as the high street was very busy when I arrived and every available car parking space was occupied. Parking was included in the room rate which added further to the value for money.
Overall I would recommend this hotel. The quality of the room, the great food, great location, and characterful ambience all mean there is a lot to recommend it.

The Castle & Ball Hotel Overview
High Street, Marlborough, Wiltshire SN8 1LZ
Situated in the centre of Britain's widest high street, the Castle and Ball has had an interesting past. It occupies a site which has had an inn standing on it since the 15th century. From 1745 to 1763 it was called the Antelope and was renamed The Castle and Ball, which may well have been a misspelling of Castle and Bull, both of which are to be seen on the Borough Arms. Some of the hotel's surviving original oak timbers pre-dates the Spanish Armada.
