The Carpenters Arms Windsor Reviews
The Carpenters Arms Jan 28, 2012
The Carpenter’s Arms is a pub in Windsor where I saw two handsome young men dressed as highwaymen quietly drinking together in a dungeon. The really interesting thing was that everyone was far too posh and far too well bred to ask the young men why they were being highwaymen in a dungeon, or in fact being highwaymen at all, and no one took any photos on their phones. Although I would imagine the young men are not there all the time, the very well-to-do clientele probably are.
Apart from that, it is a lovely pub with a nice restaurant. It isn’t cheap (I don’t think anything in Windsor is!), at around £10 a main, but it isn’t all that expensive either. There are nice beers and wines, and the service was really good and very friendly, despite the best efforts of the highwaymen to persuade the waitress she should stop being a waitress and come and have a drink with them. The food we had was excellent. The lamb shank pie and ham hock were both particularly nicely done. It may not be the ideal place to take a vegetarian, but I think there are veggie options, and there is also a slightly lighter and cheaper lunch menu available.
One course and non-alcoholic drinks for three people came to £41 ish. Disabled access is slightly dubious, as many tables are up or down stairs and the toilets are in the basement. I’m afraid I forgot to check if there was a disabled toilet on the main floor. The pub is decorated in a relaxed old fashioned pub sort of a way.
And the two young men explained to the waitress that, as it happens, they just like getting dressed up and going to the pub. The Carpenter’s Arms has a little dungeon that they feel adds to the ambience, and enough space for the occasional good mannered sword fight. So they are by no means a guaranteed feature of the bar, and don’t blame me if you don’t see them, but it says a lot for the pub that it’s the sort of people where two men dressed as highwaymen can drink and feel like they fit right in.
