Cape du Couedic in Australia! Dec 19, 2009
The name of this lighthouse and its location captured my attention. "Du Couedic" sounded like home (Brittany, western part of France), but I was actually at the south-western point of Kangaroo Island, the third biggest island of Australia. I wrote down its name somewhere to find out why Brittany has come so far !

For the record, I read the Cape was named in 1803 by a French explorer (Baudin) in honour of his friend Charles Louis, Chevalier du Couedic de Kergoualer, who was a French sea captain (born in Brittany ^^). Matthew Flinders was actually the first European to arrive on the Island. Baudin went there a year later, passed the opposite side and named the cape.

The lighthouse was built a century later, between 1906 and 1909.

It is 25 metres high, for an elevation of 103 meters.

The Cape du Couedic Lighthouse Jun 07, 2008
The Cape du Couedic Lighthouse was constructed between 1906-1909 on the southwest point of Kangaroo Island and was the 15th to be built in South Australia. Nearby treacherous waters had claimed many lives. The site was inaccessible by land at the time of construction so a jetty was built at Weirs Cove, a mile north of the light location. Cape du Couedic was extremely isolated and was supplied only every three months by steamer. It was not until 1940 that the first automobile reached the lighthouse.

Other nearby features include Admiral's Arch at the end of the Point and the extraordinary Remarkable Rocks 4 kilometers east. The area is also populated with New Zealand fur seals.
