The Bridge, Mostar Jan 09, 2013
I really enjoyed my side excursion to The Mostar Bridge and hope to go back one day. It was definitely an adventure to get there! The small town is surrounded by shops and little markets being run by locals. There were many beggers there. Approaching the bridge seemed surreal. I was approached by a mostar native. She had brown hair and piercing blue eyes. We carried on a conversation about her hometown and how she likes working at this small restaurant there. Incredible experience :)

Maybe you have - or maybe you haven't Nov 27, 2010
To have seen the bridge in my photographs, you must have visited Mostar before 1993. If you have been since 2004 and they look familiar - so they should because a bridge was built to be just like Stari Most (the Old Bridge.)

I know well that the deaths and destruction of people's lives mattered more than any bridge but I still grieved for the old bridge when it was destroyed during the war between Croats and Bosnians.

I read at this time that the bridge over the Neretva river linked two mutually hostile communities. I can only say that we gathered no such impression in 1976, when we were there. I have rarely been anywhere that seemed to exude such a sense of peace.

I try to respect other peoples' beliefs but it is hard when religion and nationalism have been responsible for so many deaths.

You were fortunate to visit Mostar back then. The bridge is rebuild, but the city is more developed now and much more touristy!

The Stari Most of Mostar Aug 31, 2008
To me the The Stari Most of Mostar has been one of the most beautiful bridges of all time. The city of Mostar was even named after its Old Bridge (Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian: Stari Most) and the towers on its sides, "the bridge keepers"; mostari). For me there was no doubt the bridge were my goal and maybe the reason for me to drive all this way.

The Stari Most is hump-backed, 4 meters wide and 30 meters long bridge, and dominates the river from a height of 24 meters. Two beautiful and fortified towers protect it: the Helebija tower on the northeast and the Tara tower on the southwest; called the bridge keepers or natively mostari.

The arch of the bridge is made of local stone known as tenelija. The shape of the arch is the result of numerous irregularities produced by the deformation of the intrados (the inner line of the arch). The most accurate description would be that it is a circle of which the centre is depressed in relation to the string course. Instead of foundations, the bridge has abutments of limestone linked to wing walls along the waterside cliffs.

The original bridge was destroyed by Croatian Defence Council units during the Bosnian War, on November 9, 1993 at 10:15 am and since the end of the Balkan war in 1995, great progress is being made in the reconstruction of the city of Mostar, and over 15 million dollars has been spent on restoration.

A project to rebuild the Old Bridge to the original design, and restore surrounding structures and historic neighbourhoods was initiated in 1999 and mostly completed by spring 2004.

The money for this reconstruction was donated by Spain, USA, Turkey, Italy, the Netherlands, and Croatia. A grand opening was held on July 23, 2004 and in July 2005; UNESCO finally inscribed the Old Bridge and its closest vicinity onto the World Heritage List.
