The Breakwater Lighthouse Rockland Reviews
Walking the Breakwater Apr 16, 2008
If it’s a nice sunny day in Rockland and you’re looking for something to do I recommend walking out to the Breakwater Lighthouse. There is a little parking area at the end of Samoset Rd where you can leave your vehicle to get out and explore. There is a little park at the beginning of the trail which makes for a nice place to have lunch or just to sit and watch the lobster boats coming in and out of the harbor. The Breakwater is about a mile long and leads out to Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. A small brick lighthouse that is still in use to aid in navigation of ships it has a 4th order Fresnel lens and its fog horn blasts once every 15 seconds. If you do plan on walking out their remember your on the water there is usually a breeze and the temp drops a few degrees. The Breakwater is made of granite which is uneven and has big gaps so wear sensible shoes. It gets slippery if it’s wet also if there is a thunderstorm and you’re out their they recommend staying close to the lighthouse. It is a nice place to come and watch the sunrise if your an early bird. Also a lot of people use it to fish off of for Mackerels and strippers. It’s a nice place to take a walk and just relax you can listen to the gulls and the waves crashing around the granite wall.
