The Breakers Resort Myrtle Beach Reviews
Overall Great Place Mar 04, 2016
We stayed here one night as part of our Myrtle Beach race weekend (which leads to my main concern later on). We had a very nice suite for the six of us. We were on the fourth floor and had no other rooms across the hallway. The suite opened into a bedroom with two beds which flowed into a galley kitchen with the bathroom opposite and then ended in the living room with a balcony. The bedroom had an interesting little feature: a window that looked into the hallway. I'm not sure what they did for the noise since I slept in the living room where the couch folded out into a bed big enough for two smaller people. There was also a pull down bed from the wall so the room could handle seven people total. Both the bedroom and the living room had their own TV's which was nice for separate entertainment. With three of our group needing to be up early Saturday for the big races, the doors separating the bedroom from the kitchen and then the kitchen from the living room were a really helpful touch.
The kitchen had a decent sink and full stove and oven and very useful if we had wanted to do any real cooking. We did take advantage of keeping things cool in the refrigerator and making coffee and toasted items. I loved that we had lots of real dishes and cups.
The sink in the kitchen was extra helpful considering that we only had only bathroom for all six of us. That bathroom was spacious but just one sink can slow things down a bit. I definitely appreciated all the counter space in the bathroom. It was very clean and we had enough towels for the group.
We had a great view of the ocean from our balcony. In fact that was the first place most of us headed after we got in the room! There were two small chairs out there that if it had been warmer or if we had had more time than one quick evening we might have enjoyed.
I slept well on the pull-out couch and did not hear any complaints from anyone else in our group about their bed. We did have some trouble with noise from other rooms; there was a large school group also staying at the hotel and they were not the quietest.
Which leads to my concern. My sister booked this hotel based on it being one of the good neighbor hotels for the race which seemed to mean that while not the official hotel for the marathon, it would accommodate us. I know a hotel needs to make money but knowing that a lot of racers who would need to be up early would be staying there makes also booking a lot of noisy middle schoolers a bit annoying. It also did not help that noise from the pool area below drifted up to our room from the outside. Thankfully, things quieted down around eleven, a decent time if wake up wasn't around 4:30 AM for some of our racers.
After my sister and her husband finished their races, they had enough time to get back to room and take showers. However, our friend Janie even though finishing 26.2 miles in just over 4 hours was not able to return before checkout time. We had known this was likely and had checked the night before about a late checkout. The clerk at the desk had said we had to check back the next morning to set it up but made it sound like a very likely option. However, when we checked at just after 7 AM the front desk told us no, all rooms were booked (we're not 100% sure this was true since we had just cancelled our Saturday night stay on Thursday). Then when we waited in the lobby for Janie to finish changing in the restroom, one of the clerks looked less than happy with us. Once again, I understand the need for a business to run as a business but don't agree to be a good neighbor hotel if you aren't going to accommodate the runners.
The resort itself is large with multiple towers and an amazing water play area. Beach access is immediate. There is parking across the street but guests and bags can be dropped off right in front of the main towers. There is a place to eat in the downstairs of one of the towers and several other places within walking distance.
