The Bookworm Chengdu Reviews
Eat, Drink, Read Nov 27, 2014
The Bookworm is a popular place for expats to hangout in Chengdu. On the sign it says "Eat, Drink, Read" and books aplenty (over 16,000) they have inside to read and they can be borrowed too with membership fee (see their website for details). Some books can be purchased too, like new arrivals, and if they don't have it, will order it for you. More than a bookstore, it's also a restaurant serving Western style food (breakfast, lunch and dinner or late night snack) and an average meal costs around 50 RMB (~$8 USD). The full menus are available on their website. There is a full bar too serving beer, cocktails, fruity drinks and coffee/cappuccino/espresso. Average price for the coffees range from 15 to 35 RMB (~$2.50 to $6.50 USD)
The decor is homey with lots of nooks and crannies for seclusion, but open spaces too for socializing. Tables, chairs, stools and sofas spread about the place while books, books and more books line the walls. Where there are not books lining the walls there are many things hanging about such as B&W photographs, posters (some vintage, some modern) and various items of Chinese cultural interest mixed in here and there. It has an overall comfortable feel to it with decor, lighting, and furnishings. There is live music (jazz, piano, classical) every night. They host various events during the year including a yearly literary festival. For a Westerner living in Chengdu, I can see this as a place to visit and connect with other Westerners.
I visited here mainly because it was Thanksgiving and I wanted to have a traditional meal that day while in Chengdu. This place offered that and I saw many other Western people enjoying a Thanksgiving dinner too. The food was above average as far as Western food goes in China, which usually has all the right items together, but prepared oddly - Like Western food cooked Chinese style. The food here had a homemade Western taste, which I appreciated. If in Chengdu, do check out their website and have a visit here.
