Marvelous Art Collections in Sydney Aug 19, 2011
Finally, I made it to the ‘Art Gallery of NSW’. The gallery front has two magnificent statues (The Offering of Peace, and The Offering of War). The names of the famous artists were sculpted on the outside wall of the building (I’m not an art-expert, but I noticed some famous names such as Donatello, Michael Angelo, Raphael, Phytagoras, or Rembrandt). Below the names are the beautiful wall reliefs with stories from different ancient cultures. Some interesting FAQs can be found in : http://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/about-us/history/faq/#faq-77. All the collections were distributed in ground level and lower levels (two of them), which include Australian art, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, Asian art, Contemporary art, Pacific art, photography, and Western art. The paintings collection in ground level was my favorite. I noticed some high school students making sketches in one room, copying the paintings, apparently part of their assignments. Entrance to most of the collections are free, except for the specialized seasonal exhibitions. The lower floor also has one café who were very full during the day.
