A true Route 66 landmark cafe (quite possibly the oldest one still in operation, opened in 1924), the Ariston Cafe offers a great menu and great food, plus the ambiance of an American original. It has even been inducted into the Route 66 Hall of Fame.

I have eaten here twice and have had wonderful meals each time. The Ariston has a large menu to choose from. The restaurant was founded by a Greek immigrant (his son and grandson now run the restaurant) and their menu includes Greek selections like gyros and baklava, as well as cafe and diner standards. You can't go wrong with WHATEVER you choose. I got the gyro, a scrumptious sandwich.

When you are nearing the end of your meal, your server will come by with a tray of decadent desserts that are hard to resist and are of massive size. May I recommend the creamy Chocolate Delight? (Like I said... hard to resist!) But other selections include the aforementioned baklava, Coconut Delight, cherry cheesecake... the list goes on.

The restaurant itself has an eclectic mix of memorablilia. It is definitely worth checking out -- a nostalgic dining experience on the historic Route 66 in Central Illinois.
