The Anta Grande do Zambujeiro
The Anta Grande do Zambujeiro Reviews
Intriguing Sep 11, 2010
‘The Anta Grande do Zambujeiro’ is located at about ten kilometers from Évora, near a tiny village called Valverde. This Anta Grande do Zambujeiro is one of the largest dolmen in the region. It was constructed around 4000 to 3500 B.C. and was used by Neolithic communities as a burial place.
The actual burial chamber is made of seven large stones that are about 8 meters high. Originally there was also a 7 meter wide stone that formed the roof of the chamber. The chamber opens into a corridor of similar, smaller stones and is 12 meters long. The entrance used to be marked by a large decorated menhir, but this is now lying on the ground.
This dolmen is not as impressive as the Cromeleque des Almendres, which had a somewhat mysterious atmosphere, but it is intriguing nonetheless.
Even if you’re not that interested in ancient stones, the drive up there is lovely. You have to follow small wooden signs that bring you to narrow dirt roads, but the landscape is beautiful. It’s dry and desolate, scattered with olive- and cork trees. The only person we saw during our drive up to Zambujeiro was a shepherd with a herd of cows.
