The Ancient Amathous

The Ancient Amathous is one of the important settlements in Cyprus from ancient times. The city is one of the cities which grew under the ancient Greeks. It is located on the coastal road just down at the coast between Larnaca and Lemosos. The city used to be a very important city as one of the four original kingdoms of Cyprus.

The city was founded by Kinyras back in about 1000 BC. Kinyras was one of the main driving figures in introducing Aphrodite as the main goddess of Cyprus. Hence it is no wonder this city was one of the main areas of Aphrodite worship on the island.

There is not very much remaining of the city unfortunately. There is only a small area around the old basilica and a few foundations of some of the buildings. Hence it is a bit difficult to understand what the city used to look like in the old days. In general there is not really that much to see at the site.
